Change your mindset to change your business

Digital disruptors think about opportunity differently. Even though technology plays a key role in their actions, their edge does not come from technology; technology is just a means to a different end, an end that most people can’t even conceive of because they don’t have the disruptor’s mindset. Equipped with the right mindset, disruptors naturally see technology and other tools in a different light, one that enables them to see past the problems to the solutions that digital can help them deliver more rapidly than before.

There are two mindset: barrier-based vs. benefits-based. These two mindsets interpret the vital question “How can we make a new product that we can successfully sell?” uniquely. One will lead to copying competitors, while another will lead to adjacent possibilities.

  • Barrier-based Mindset

Focusses on making what we have the capacity to make, on the product itself and on how we’ll sell the product we create.

  • Benefits-based Mindset

Focusses on the the ability we have to give our customers, even if it lies outside of our capacity. To turn our attention to the needs of the customer, letting the product decision flow from that and lastly obsessing about the total experience of our product within the customers desires.

The subject of the sentence hasn’t changed - we’re still the ones who have to act on the opportunity, after all. but the ideas embedded in the question have completely changed.
